A better battery, fuel-saving software and the electric Smart microcar

Ion battery

Battery background
Lithium-ion is the battery of choice for electric vehicles because compared to other rechargeable batteries, they generally carry more charge for their weight and size, which is key to powering a vehicle.

Getting there
Garmin's new ecoRoute software uses a car's gas mileage and the current price of gasoline to compute the route that uses the least fuel. The software is a free update to some Nuvi models and will be released soon.

Smart microcar

Super smart
Tesla Motors and Daimler are developing an electric Smart microcar, with plans to initially make 1,000 of the vehicles available near the end of this year. Cost and how far it could go on a charge have not been announced.
