Solar-paneled hybrids, leading the charge, and a happy medium for your engine

Fisker Karma

Good karma
California startup Fisker Automotive debuted its plug-in Fisker Karma last month, vowing to sell 15,000 of the sporty luxury hybrids. The car, which has solar panels on the roof, will have a starting price of $87,900 when it rolls off the assembly line in October.

Electric plug-in

Charge it
Ontario officials have announced plans to build a network of electric-vehicle rapid charging stations scattered around the metropolitan Toronto area. The province follows in the footsteps of Israel, Denmark and Australia by announcing plans to develop an infrastructure based around the promise of electric cars.

Stickshift

Eco tip
Unless you're accelerating to pass, there's no need to rev out the engine past 3,000 -- or even 2,000 -- rpm on each shift. A 1,000-rpm reduction at the shift points will pay you dividends, but guard against going too low, which is hard on the engine.
