San Fran Zipcar fleet gets a little greener
Zipcar has added a plug-in hybrid vehicle -- a converted Toyota Prius with a Hymotion L5 PCM battery -- to its fleet in San Francisco. The company, which allows members to use its cars by the hour or day, was the first commercial fleet to widely introduce standard hybrids in Seattle in 2003. The battery provides the Prius with up to 30-40 miles of electrically assisted driving on a single charge from the utility grid.

Ford reopens plant to build "eco" engines
A Ford plant in suburban Cleveland, idled since 2007, has reopened to make a new line of fuel-efficient engines -- the 3.5-liter, V-6 EcoBoost that will be standard on the Ford Taurus SHO and optional on the Lincoln MKS and MKT, and Ford Flex cars. Ford says the new engine will get an estimated 25 to 26 miles per gallon on the highway. The plant initially will use about 250 workers from another engine plant and a casting plant.
