Obama license plates, green measures for yellow taxis and VW's roadster

Obama plate

Those Obama plates aren't just for Illinois
Illinois residents have just over a month left to display their temporary commemorative Barak Obama license plates. The plates sell for $50, with proceeds going to the Illinois Library Association and a children's summer reading program called iRead, and Obama fans could start displaying them in February. They must revert to their old plates April 18, at which time the rest of the nation can nab a pair of plates -- for commemorative purposes only. Go to ila.org/obama to order.

Taxis

Your next visit to NYC might smell sweeter
A new law seeks to cut pollution by giving vehicles just 60 seconds to idle in a school zone, down from the previous allowed time of three minutes. It also gives more city agencies the power to issue violations and requires an annual violations report to track enforcement. Councilman John Liu, lead sponsor of the bill, said the law was not only intended to reduce pollution in school areas but also to improve public awareness about idling throughout New York City. Fines range from $220 to $2,000 for repeat offenders.
