"Flying car" makes successful air debut
Aiming to make an airplane that can be driven to and from a runway and parked in the family garage at night, the Terrafugia company announced the first flight of its Transition Roadable Aircraft, a two-seat aircraft that can be transformed into a car in about 30 seconds and can drive at highway speeds. It runs on regular unleaded gasoline. The first flight was just 37 seconds, but was mainly to test the landing, which was deemed successful.

World groups call for fuel efficiency boost
The U.N. Environment Program and other world bodies presented the "50 by 50" strategy -- 50 percent less gasoline per mile or kilometer by 2050 -- at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this month. The plan calls for companies to exploit existing technologies for better engines and drive trains, reduced weight and improved aerodynamics. The plan also includes policy options such as fuel taxes and green incentives. Along with UNEP, the plan was endorsed by the International Energy Agency, International Transport Forum and Formula-1 racing body FIA.
