World Car of the Year awards were given in three categories last week at the start of the New York International Auto Show. To be eligible for the awards, vehicles had to be in production and on sale in at least two countries in 2008. The vehicles are chosen and voted on by a panel of 59 automotive journalists from 25 countries.
World Car: Volkswagen Golf VI. Other finalists: Ford Fiesta and the Toyota iQ.
World Performance Car: Nissan GT-R. Other finalists: Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 and the Porsche 911 Carrera.
World Car Design: Fiat 500. Other finalists: Citroen Sedan/C5 Tourer and the Jaguar X.
