Study: Fatal crashes down in Washington
Last year Washington's roads were the scene of the fewest fatal crashes since 1955. According to preliminary statistics compiled by the Washington Traffic Safety Commission, the number of traffic-related fatalities in the state has fallen from 649 in 2005 to 483 in 2009. While the statistics are encouraging, some state lawmakers believe the roads would be even safer if law enforcement could pull over drivers using cellphones as a primary offense. But statistics statewide show the number of accidents because of cell phones going down. In 2006, "telecommunications device" was listed as a contributing factor in 1,246 collisions, with 27 collisions resulting in fatal or serious injuries. In 2008, the number had declined to 827 collisions, with 13 resulting in serious of fatal injuries.

National used-car database is online
The National Motor Vehicle Title Information System -- a national database that allows consumers to view the history of used vehicles -- is now live at nmvtis.gov. The system allows potential used car buyers to check the title, odometer reading, accident history and other information for a fee of less than $5. All states, insurance carriers and junk yards are required to submit data on vehicles to the system.
