Mazda compact
Mazda says it will sell its new subcompact, the Mazda2, for a starting price of $13,980 when it arrives in showrooms this summer. The company also announced that two new gasoline and diesel engines will debut in the U.S. next year, boosting the automaker's fuel efficiency. The tiny Mazda2 will have a 100 horsepower engine and get 35 mpg on the highway.

Volt testing
Real-world tests show that the Volt, General Motors' rechargeable electric car, can travel 40 miles on battery power as promised, company engineers say. They are testing six Volts that recently were made on a Detroit assembly line. The engineers also announced that the Volt is on schedule for full production in November.
