Efficiency costs
A federal report has calculated the price of boosting fuel-efficiency in cars and light trucks. The study, from the National Academies of Science, found fuel consumption in vehicles with conventional engines could be reduced by 29 percent at an added cost to consumers of about $2,200 per vehicle. Switching to diesel engines and components could yield fuel savings of about 37 percent at an added cost of $5,900. Gas-electric hybrid engines and components could reduce fuel as much as 43 percent at an increase of $6,000.
BMW hybrids
BMW recently announced that a gas-electric 5 Series (shown above) could be on road next year and that a hybrid 3 Series is also in the works. BMW is expected to offer a hybrid option in every one of its vehicles by the end of the decade.
