Four-door Smart car will be U.S. exclusive
Nissan has partnered with car dealership chain Penske Automotive Group to build a new four-door version of the Smart car. The new car (shown at right), set to go on sale in the fourth quarter of 2011, would expand Smart's lineup to include a larger five-seat passenger car in addition to the fortwo minicar, Penske says. The car will be designed and engineered by Smart and Nissan and sold only in the U.S., a Smart spokesman said.

Buick to get new fuel-efficient compact
General Motors is adding a new compact car to its Buick luxury brand as the automaker broadens its lineup of fuel-efficient vehicles. The compact, called the Verano, will be a luxury version of the Chevrolet Cruze, a model that is just now reaching dealerships. GM is hoping the smaller Buick, which will go on sale at the start of 2012, will help attract younger people to the brand. Until recently, Buicks were mostly characterized by bench seats and soft, cushy rides. Buick sales so far this year are up 58 percent thanks to strong demand for the LaCrosse luxury sedan and Enclave large wagon.
