Mileage rules
The government recently suggested that automakers could be required to build fleets that average between 47 and 62 mpg by 2025. The Obama administration intends to issue a proposal in September 2011 and a final rule by late July 2012. Rules adopted earlier this year will lift the new vehicle fleet average to 35.5 mpg by 2016.

Fit hybrid
Honda's new hybrid Fit subcompact went on sale in Japan this month and will be introduced in Europe next year. It's the third "green" car for Honda, along with the Insight and CR-Z sports car. There are no plans to sell the Fit hybrid in the U.S.
