AAA recommends the following checks that car owners should do before winter-driving season.
Can do at home:
__ Check the condition and connections of the battery cables and terminals. Remove any corrosion from the terminals and posts.
__ Inspect drive belts for cracks or fraying.
__ Visually inspect the cooling system hoses for leaks, cracks or loose clamps.
__ Check tire type and tread. If any tire has less than 3/32-inches of tread, it should be replaced.
__ Check the engine's air filter by holding it up to a 60-watt light bulb. If the light is blocked by most of the filter, replace it.
__ Check the coolant level.
__ Check the operation of all headlights, taillights, emergency flashers, turn signals, brake lights and back-up lights.
__ Replace wiper blades that leave streaks or miss spots.
__ Fill the windshield washer fluid reservoir with a cleaning solution that has antifreeze components.
__ Check transmission, brake and power steering fluids.
__ Update the car's emergency kit for winter weather. (Please link to the main story)
Should do with a technician:
__ Have the battery and charging system tested for a fully charged battery.
__ Have brakes inspected.
