30 for 300
Chrysler says it will put an eight-speed automatic transmission in its all-new 300 luxury sedan that will push the big car to 30 mpg on the highway. Chrysler says that will give the luxury car class-leading fuel economy. The car is due out in the spring with a five-speed transmission that gets 27 mpg. The eight-speed is due this summer.

BYD plans
Chinese automaker BYD recommitted to selling electric and hybrid vehicles in the U.S. at the Detroit auto show last week, where it showed its e6 Premier (shown at right). A plan to sell an electric crossover in the U.S. last year didn't materialize, but the company says it hopes to have the e6 here by 2012.
