Thinking big
Chrysler has joined the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in a project to design and develop a hydraulic hybrid powertrain system that's suitable for large passenger cars and light-duty trucks. The Dodge Grand Caravan (pictured) will become its first running demonstration vehicle sometime in 2012. Hydraulic hybrid technology offers significant fuel savings compared to traditional powertains.

Island charge
About $2.6 million in federal stimulus money will be used to build approximately 250 electric-vehicle charging stations in Hawaii. Many of the charging stations will be built by private companies and county governments over the next year, and the power will likely be offered for free to electric-car drivers.
