Ford efficiency
Ford F-150 buyers are increasingly opting for the EcoBoost 3.5-liter V-6 engine (shown). It offers horsepower comparable to a V-8, but is 20 percent more fuel efficient and produces 15 percent fewer carbon-dioxide emissions than the larger engine. The engine accounted for 36 percent of F-150 sales in April.

Lighter spare
An on-board tire inflator kit cuts 26 pounds of spare-tire and jacking-hardware weight in the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze Eco, improving the compact's fuel efficiency. The inflator can be plugged into the 12-volt accessory socket inside the car to re-pressurize the tire. If the tire has been punctured, the inflator can inject a sealant to plug the hole.
