"I LOVE OUR CAR BECAUSE ... it's a bit funny and goofy -- just like me! I enjoy putting the top down year-round and feeling the wind in my face. People always ask me questions about the car, the most frequent being, 'what's the mpg?' Answer: A mere 36-43."

I love the idea of getting more people out of their big cars and into much smaller cars. I've seen videos of crash test on these smart cars and they do VERY well. Bigger cars don't necessarily provide more safety. The problem with smart cars is the gas mileage isn't better than a Honda civic hybrid or Insight. If Mercedes could have put a better more efficient engine in these Smart Cars (autostop/ etc), and they got 60- 80 mpg, these cars would have been much more popular.

My car is smarter. It's been paid for for many years. My wise choice of living rather close to work is as good as having a super fuel efficient car. And if I really want to be efficient, I'll just commute with my electric bicycle.

A 1991 Geo Metro gets and EPA rated 37 city / 45 hwy.
Technology seems able to provide a solution to any societal problem these days.
But, when it comes to gas mileage, it appears that we are regressing...

We are not really regressing as far as mileage goes as cars has gotten much safer over the years than your Geo Metro with ABS, Airbags and lots of other now mandatory protection systems. The fact that the current cars get the same mileage with considerable more weight says enough
