Clean machines
Those hailing a cab in Los Angeles or Chicago might get to ride in a Ford Transit Connect Taxi powered by compressed natural gas (shown). Two taxi companies in L.A. ordered nearly 120 of the vehicles, and 12 are already on the streets of Chicago. CNG burns cleaner than gasoline, resulting in 30 to 40 percent less greenhouse gas emissions.

Getting standard
German automakers including Audi, BMW, Daimler, Porsche and Volkswagen are supporting a standardized "smart" home charging system for electric vehicles. The HomePlug GP standard allows EVs to send and receive data over the Internet via a vehicle's charging port. This allows it to intelligently charge during off-peak hours, and enables remote checks of systems and battery conditions.
