GM testing insurance giveaway in state
General Motors is test-marketing a free year of auto insurance as an incentive to buyers in the Northwest, according to the industry magazine Automotive News. Customers in Oregon and Washington who buy or lease a new GM vehicle through Sept. 6 will receive a free one-year automobile insurance policy from MetLife Auto & Home. The offer extends to GM vehicles spanning the 2010-12 model years. If the pilot program successfully boosts sales, GM will consider expanding it to other markets.

Survey: Auto executives optimistic about industry growth
The auto industry is back -- and poised for a positive future -- according to a KPMG survey of 100 top automotive executives. A poll released Aug. 1 found that 73 percent increased revenue last year and 72 percent expect to do so next year, too. Coinciding with that, more than half added personnel since last year, with an additional 62 percent anticipating hiring people next year. Of the 13 sectors KPMG surveyed -- including aerospace and defense, pharmaceuticals, banking, technology and building and construction -- automotive was the most bullish on hiring. In addition, close to seven out of 10 auto executives see "significant cash" on their balance sheet and 71 percent are planning for capital spending next year.
