Fuel standards
By the time the Obama administration's new fuel standards take effect, the government expects gas-electric hybrids to make up about half the lineup of new vehicles, with electric vehicles making up about 10 percent fleets. The standards pledge to double overall fuel economy to 54.5 mpg by 2025. Currently, hybrid and electric vehicles combined amount to less than 3 percent of U.S. vehicle sales.

Focus promo
A short test drive gave Ford miles of publicity for its upcoming electric Focus. On a recent "Late Show with David Letterman," the comedy host took a prototype of the vehicle for a spin across the stage. Ford CEO Alan Mulally, who was a guest on the show, offered the drive after Letterman said he has two electric cars, but neither is a domestic brand. The electric Focus goes on sale at the end of the year.
