Cleanest plant
Volkswagen's new 1,400-acre plant in Chattanooga, Tenn., was recently rated as the cleanest and most energy-efficient car-manufacturing site in the world by the U.S. Green Building Council. It awarded the plant a platinum LEED certification, the only auto manufacturing site to receive that honor. Some of the plant's conservation measures include an ultra-clean paint shop, LED lighting that uses two-thirds less energy, and rainwater collection that's used to flush toilets.

Big partnership
Toyota and BMW have agreed to collaborate on research for cleaner, next-generation car batteries. BMW will also begin supplying "clean" diesel engines to Toyota in 2014 for models for the European market.
