Water conservation
Ford is setting a goal to cut the amount of water used to make each vehicle by 30 percent globally by 2015, compared with the amount of water used per vehicle in 2009. Ford has been working on water reduction for some time. Between 2000 and 2010, the company reduced its global water use by 62 percent, or 10.5 billion gallons.

Battery upgrades
General Motors will upgrade the steel structure and liquid cooling system that surround the battery in its Chevrolet Volt to address concerns that the car could catch fire after a severe crash. GM says the modifications to the car (shown) are voluntary "enhancements," not a recall.
