Battery guarantee
Hyundai announced at the Detroit auto show last week that it will offer a lifetime replacement guarantee for the hybrid batteries in its Sonata gas-electric hybrid (shown). Hyundai sold 25,918 Sonata hybrids last year. The company says buyers are still skeptical about battery life and that it can afford the program because the failure rates are so low.

Prius on top
The Prius gas-electric hybrid was Japan's top-selling vehicle in 2011 for the third straight year, underlining how the ecological car has scored a big hit. Sales of Toyota's Prius (shown) totaled 252,528 vehicles in 2011, the Japan Automobile Dealers Association says. The Fit subcompact from Japanese rival Honda, which also comes in hybrid models, was No. 2.
