Volkswagen Passat Alltrack
Volkswagen showed this overseas model at the New York auto show in April as a "concept" to gauge U.S. interest. The wagon is intended to close a gap between a car and an SUV, providing a higher ride for off-road driving without the size of the SUV. It features all-wheel-drive, a steel underbody guard, chunky bumpers and flared side skirts.

Now give it a TDI engine and I would be all over this. I would love an all wheel drive VW wagon with a diesel that would get 40 mpg or better on the highway.

America already has this car. It's called the Subaru Outback.

Until it gets a TDI and gets 48 mpg like our current 2002 Jetta TDI wagon, we are not interested. We just passed 200,000 miles just doing regular maintenance and have had zero problems. Too bad they didn't make more of them.

The outback handles like a truck....ugh!!
Not everybody rides off-road everyday....many of us just live in the country and need a hybrid highway/dirt road vehicle. If the alltrack provides that wonderful German handling, I'm in.
