Market-research firm Mintel says sales of alternative-fuel vehicles, such as the Toyota Prius (shown), were up 73 percent in 2012 compared with 2011. The number of available plug-in and electric models nearly quadrupled over a year, from three models in 2011 to 11 this year. Mintel expects 2013 sales to increase by 14 percent over 2012.

As part of the Green eMotion project funded by the European Union, IBM will introduce B2B Marketplace, a project that allows energy providers, carmakers and charging-point owners to share and integrate services on one common IT platform. B2B Marketplace plans to create a network of EV charging services that are compatible throughout Europe by 2015.
