ELIO beginning
Startup company Elio Motors has purchased a former General Motors plant in Baton Rouge, La. The company plans to build a two-seat, three-wheeled vehicle that will average 65 mpg and sell for $6,800. Production is expected to begin in 2014. Elio Motors is taking reservations for the egg-shaped vehicle, also called the Elio (shown), which will have power windows, air bags and air conditioning.

Electric switch
General Electric Co.'s commitment two years ago to buy 25,000 electric autos by 2015 — such as the Chevrolet Volt (shown) — is taking a detour. The obstacle: Customers of GE's corporate fleet-services unit wanted more options. So GE has included natural-gas-powered pickups and propane-fueled vehicles among the fleet options.
