New coupe is milestone for BMW; Mazda lauded for its Skyactiv

Zero emissions
BMW's i3 coupe (shown) is set to become the automaker's first zero-emission, mass-produced vehicle. The car, which made its debut at the L.A. auto show this past November, will help lead the wave of what German experts anticipate will be 1 million electric vehicles on their roads by 2020.

Tech award
Mazda's Skyactiv technology received the Green Car Journal's 2013 Green Car Technology Award. The fuel-economy technology, introduced in the 2012 Mazda3 (shown), was selected from a field of 10 finalist technologies in fuel efficiency, including those from automakers Ford, Fiat, Tesla, Honda, Toyota, Nissan and Fisker.
