Lofty emissions goals

A new National Research Council report says the U.S. may be able to reduce fossil-fuel consumption and greenhouse-gas emissions by 80 percent by 2050 in light-duty cars and trucks. The highly ambitious goal could be reached, the report says, through a combination of more-efficient vehicles and the use of gasoline and diesel alternatives. The council recommends investments in hybrid and electric vehicles, as well as hydrogen fuel-cell and compressed natural gas vehicles.

Infiniti hybrid debuts
Infiniti is unveiling its 2014 QX60 Hybrid at the ongoing New York auto show. It's expected to get a combined fuel economy of 26 mpg, which would be best-in-class for seven-passenger luxury crossovers. The hybrid maintains the same passenger and luggage space as in the standard QX60, with the battery located under the third-row seats.
