Designed to be a highly fuel-efficient car, the XL1 gets 261 mpg. The hybrid, which debuted at the Geneva auto show in March, can cover up to 32 miles as a zero-emissions vehicle in all-electric mode. Its fuel tank holds 2.64 gallons of diesel fuel. The right-side passenger seat is set back a few inches and slightly behind the driver, allowing for more room for the passenger and a more aerodynamic shape for the car. Carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic is used on all body panels and doors. VW will make 250 test units for European driving.
